Navigating a Changing Relationship with Your Mom Postpartum

Not medical advice. For emergencies, call your local emergency number.

Becoming a new mother is a profound life change, and it often brings shifts in family dynamics. For many new mothers (FTM), the relationship with their own mothers can become particularly complex. This post highlights common challenges, such as unsolicited advice, judgment, criticism of parenting choices, and even mean comments, which can leave new moms feeling overwhelmed and unsupported.

It’s understandable to wish for a supportive presence from your own mother during this vulnerable time. The transition to motherhood can highlight existing relationship patterns and create new ones. If you’re experiencing similar feelings, know that you are not alone.

Here are some strategies to consider:

  1. Set Boundaries: Gently but firmly communicate your needs and expectations regarding advice and criticism. For example, ‘Mom, I appreciate your concern, but I need to figure out what works best for my baby and me.’
  2. Limit Information: You don’t have to share every detail of your parenting journey if it leads to criticism. Keep conversations focused on lighter topics.
  3. Seek Support Elsewhere: While maternal support is ideal, it’s not always available. Lean on your partner, friends, other new moms, or support groups for encouragement.
  4. Reframe Expectations: It’s possible your mother’s intentions are good, but her delivery is poor. Or, she may have her own insecurities or outdated ideas about parenting. Adjusting your expectations can sometimes lessen disappointment.
  5. Communicate Your Feelings (When Ready): If you feel safe and ready, express how her comments make you feel. Use ‘I’ statements, like ‘I feel hurt when you criticize my choices.’

Remember, your feelings are valid. Prioritizing your well-being and your baby’s needs is paramount. Building a strong support system, even if it looks different than you imagined, is key to navigating the postpartum period with confidence.
