A Dad's Guide to Preparing for Parenthood

Before the Baby Arrives:

Shopping and Registry: Start planning purchases early. Create a registry, attend showers, and look for deals on big-ticket items like car seats and strollers.
Consider a Doula: If you plan to hire a doula, meet with candidates early. A doula can provide valuable support and comfort during the pregnancy and birth.
Understand Pregnancy Changes: Be supportive of your partner’s physical and emotional changes during pregnancy. Recognize that her body is undergoing significant transformations, and her emotional state may fluctuate.
Libido and Body Image: Be aware that libido and body comfort can be highly variable during pregnancy. Open communication is key.
Travel: Plan a significant trip before the baby arrives, as future travel may become more challenging.
Leave Policies: Familiarize yourself with FMLA, CFRA, PFL, and SDL. Understand your rights and responsibilities regarding parental leave.
Workplace Culture: Know your employment contract and your employer’s stance on family leave. Do not be pressured into taking less time than you are entitled to.
Hospital Routes: Know multiple routes to the hospital and estimate travel times in various traffic conditions.

During Labor and Delivery:

Car Seat Installation: Ensure the car seat base is properly installed in the car before the baby arrives. Many hospitals require this for discharge.
Go Bag Essentials: Pack a go-bag with personal care items, chargers, baby clothes (including a 0-3 month size), and any necessary medical information or birth plan.
Labor Positions: Understand that your partner has options for labor positions beyond lying on her back. Encourage her to explore comfortable options like walking, using a bath, or laboring on hands and knees.
Pain Management: Discuss pain management options with your partner and healthcare provider, including Nitrous Oxide and epidurals.
Cutting the Cord: Consider cutting the umbilical cord, as it can be a significant bonding experience.
Tearing and Stitches: Be aware that tearing can occur during delivery, and understand the grading system for stitches.
Early Feeding: Encourage early and frequent feeding of the baby to help with the elimination of bilirubin, which is related to jaundice.
