Before Baby Arrives:

Consider Birth Classes: While helpful, choose wisely. Focus on classes that offer practical insights, and don’t feel obligated to attend every single one, especially if they become tedious.
Plan Your Purchases: Start early by creating a registry and tracking prices for big-ticket items like car seats, strollers, and cribs. Look for sales and open-box deals.
Explore Doula Support: If considering a doula, meet potential candidates early. A doula can provide invaluable emotional and practical support, acting as a dedicated advocate during labor.
Navigate Pregnancy Realities: Pregnancy brings significant physical and hormonal changes for your partner. Be supportive, understanding, and patient through these transformations.
Address Libido and Body Image: Understand that libido and body comfort can fluctuate. Be empathetic to your partner’s feelings about body changes, especially near the end of pregnancy and postpartum.
Prioritize Travel: If possible, plan a significant trip during the second trimester when energy levels are typically higher. Future travel with a baby may be more challenging.
Understand Leave Policies: Familiarize yourself with FMLA, CFRA, PFL, and SDL. Ensure you understand and utilize all available parental leave benefits to maximize your time with your newborn.

During Labor and Delivery:

Pack a Go Bag: Prepare individual go-bags for both parents, including personal care items, chargers, snacks, essential medications and allergy information for mom, a birth plan, and changes of clothes. Include various baby sizes for the trip home.
Active Labor Choices: Your partner has options during labor beyond lying on their back. Encourage walking, using a birthing tub, or laboring on hands and knees if the facility allows.
Pain Management Options: Discuss pain management with your ObGyn. Options like Nitrous Oxide can help manage contractions, while an epidural offers more significant numbing but may lead to interventions.
The Cord Cutting: While a personal decision, cutting the umbilical cord can be a significant bonding experience. Consider participating, even if you initially felt hesitant.
