Safe Swaddling: When, How, and When to Stop
Follow safe sleep guidance; stop at first signs of rolling. Not medical advice.
Safety Principles
- Always place baby on back to sleep; firm, flat surface.
- Hips free to move (hip‑healthy swaddle); avoid tight legs.
- Keep face/uncovered; avoid overheating; check temperature.
- Stop swaddling at first signs of rolling or escape.
How‑To (Basic Wrap)
- Lay blanket in a diamond; fold top corner down.
- Place baby with shoulders at the fold; arms down at sides or hands to chest if preferred.
- Wrap one side snugly across and under the body.
- Fold up bottom allowing hip/leg movement.
- Wrap the other side across and secure; ensure breathing is unobstructed.
When to Stop
At first roll attempts, rolling to side, or repeated arm escapes. Transition to arms‑out or a sleep sack.
